The Journey to the Final Cover
Developed by Katharina Leighton and Saskia Seventer
Developing the cover design was a collaboration between the author and the design team. The design team read the draft of the novel so that they could draw inspiration from the story for the visual imagery. The slide show above shows the three stages that led to the development of the final cover. In discussion, we selected integral aspects of the books content to display on the cover. The jacaranda tree blooms and inspiration from the mother -child statue were seen as key elements to showcase the novel. Both elements are representative of typical Zimbabwean flora and sculpture and important components in the novel. Katharina, a skilled watercolour artist painted the images, and Saskia used them to design the cover. We hope that the cover they finally produced is reflective of the book content and you hear the visual story that they created.
